Abstract :

Skin depigmentation has become the most stressful cosmetic defect resulting from loss of skin colour or melanocytes, devastating to 1% of general population worldwide and very much common in north-east India. The present study is taken up to find out the coexistence of autoimmune disorder with extent of skin depigmentation in vitiligo. And its increase prevalence of serum thyroid autoantibodies, thyroid globulin (anti-TG) and thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) known as Vitiligo antibodies. By using solid phase enzyme immunoassay employing recombinant human TPO and TG from eukaryatic expression system for quantitative detection of antibodies in human serum. It is a prospective, randomised controlled study of 90 vitiligo patients 35 controls for a period of 2yrs. The disease more prevalent in female (70%) as compared to male(30%). The prevalence of AID with thyroid immunoglobulin antibodies like anti-TPO is highest 46.67% followed by both positive anti-TG and anti-TPO 18.89% and only anti-TG positive 18.89% which is statistically significant (P<0.05) with Chi-square value of 8.27, indicating autoimmune thyroid disorders are frequently associated with vitiligo (46%). Nonetheless, there exist a correlation between the extent of depigmentation and level of vitiligo antibodies, which can act as a sensitive markers for detection of early and subclinical autoimmune disorders of thyroid gland including Graves disease and Hashimotos thyroiditis. It proves that depigmentation in vitiligo precedes the onset of thyroid dysfunction.
