Verbascum (Scrophulariaceae) species are one of the important research subjects in pharmaceutical area because of their phytochemical contents and biological activities. Verbascum species have been used to treat hemorrohoids, rheumatic pain, wounds, and inflammed skin conditions in traditional medicines for centuries in almost all parts of the World. The genus Verbascum, commonly known as ?mullein?, is a widespread genus of the family Scrophulariaceae and represented by 233 species, 196 of which are endemic in Turkish flora. Our research group have studied some Verbascum species used in traditional Turkish folk medicine. Some species of genus Verbascumhave also been investigated for their antioxidant activities through various in vitro methods by us and other researchers. We have viewed the current knowledge on both the antioxidant activities and the structure-activity relationship of secondary metabolites from genus Verbascum, since many diseases are stimulated by oxidative stress and antioxidant activity is known to be strongly associated with pharmacological activities.
