Fatigue is often the first indication for the presence of some abnormality and; is a major concern in patients with cancer. It is continuously present in these patients even after the completion of treatment. To assess the level and relationship of fatigue and functional ability in adult patients with solid malignant tumors undergoing upfront surgery, a descriptive prospective study was undertaken. With convenient sampling 71 subjects were enrolled; patient data sheet, MFI-20, FACIT-F tools were used for data collection at three points of time i.e. within 7 days before the surgery in pre-operative period and twice in postoperative period at the time of discharge and after 30 days of surgery. Fatigue and functional disability were found present on assessment throughout the study period; these two parameters were found to be highly correlated. Significant impact of duration of surgery, hospital stay, blood loss and blood transfusion were found on the fatigue level and functional ability. Proper assessment, identification of etiological factors and providing practical intervention can make difference to improve the functional well-being of cancer patients.
