There has been a gradual increase in scientific research output on the plants found in Zimbabwe and used to treat respiratory conditions. Both indigenous and exotic plant species found have been documented to be in use in Zimbabwe for the management of human diseases. The conservation status of most medicinal plant species traditionally used to manage respiratory diseases in Zimbabwe are categorised as least concern. However, only two species, A. amatymbica and W. salutaris are classified as Critically Endangered. A total of 44 indigenous and 12 exotic medicinal plant species have been identified from this review as candidate targets for further toxicological evaluations and clinical research in terms of their potential to manage COVID-19 and other respiratory conditions.
