Dr Yao received his BSc degree and MSc degree from Fudan University, and PhD degree from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (supervisors: Dr Terence See-Min Wan and Dr Chun-Tao Che). He got postdoctoral training with Prof. Catherine Fenselau at University of Maryland, and with Prof. Carol Robinson FRS at University of Cambridge. He was a Research Council UK Academic Fellow in School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Ulster in 2006-2008. He joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an assistant professor in December 2008, and currently is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology.
