Roy E. Smith, MD is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology-Oncology. He is board certified in hematology and medical oncology. After completing his post-doctoral training, Dr. Smith joined the faculty at the Ohio State University (OSU) where he served as the director of the Hematology Fellowship Training Program, the Clinical Coagulation Service, and the OSU Hemophilia Center. While there he developed a practical method of platelet storage for the use in von Willebrand Factor assays. While at the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Wisconsin, he helped establish bone marrow transplant programs performing both autologous and unrelated mismatched transplants. Dr. Smith served as the Director of Medical Affairs for the NABP. He has had an interest in breast and colorectal clinical trials for many years. Dr. Smith is a former chairman of the Central Investigational Review Board for Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program of the National Cancer Institute and has played a key role in revising its role in the conduct of Cooperative Group Pogram trials. Dr. Smith received his Masters of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin. He is the co-author of several books, over 100 hundred abstracts and scientific articles.
