Gary Dmitrienko
Assosciate Professor, Department of Organic chemistry
University of Waterloo, Canada
Professor Gary I. Dmitrienko earned his Honours B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from the University of Toronto in 1970. His Ph. D. thesis research (1974) at Toronto, under the supervision of Professor Stewart McLean, concerned the structure elucidation and synthesis of indole alkaloids from Nauclea diderichi. He held a National Research Council of Canada (NRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship in the laboratory of Professor Karel Wiesner at the University of New Brunswick where he was engaged in the total synthesis of complex diterpenoid alkaloids. He then held an NRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Waterloo where he explored the mechanism of tryptophan hydroxylase and the mechanism and inhibition of serine beta lactamases with Professors Victor Snieckus and Thammaiah Viswanatha. After some time as a medicinal chemist at the Merck-Frosst Institute for Therapeutic Research in Montréal, he returned to the University of Waterloo in 1978 to take up a faculty position in the Department of Chemistry.
