A Corpus Based Research of Prohibition in the Iraqi Penal Code and Its English Translation Reveals Differences in How Criminal Legislation is Translated

Legal speech is intended to convey concepts like
responsibility, instructions, obligations, rights, authorization,
and restriction in human interactions. These elements need
to be translated carefully because they are conceptualized
differently in Arabic and English. The current essay focuses on
analyzing prohibition in the English version of the Iraqi penal code.
This is done by creating a parallel corpus of the Arabic original
text and its translation in order to examine whether the
translation contains any differences from the source text that
would cause the target audience to receive an incompatible
message. In order to describe the various prohibition
coding linguistic structures in Arabic source texts and how
they are translated into English, parallel concordances are
