The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the International Society
for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) have established several
standards; however, there are no particular guidelines for our region. The
Saudi Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SSEM) established and
validated clinical treatment guidelines to help patients and physicians in
selecting suitable health care programmes. While these recommendations
are helpful in determining acceptable procedures for children with diabetes,
they are not intended to replace individual provider clinical judgement or
to set a standard of treatment. This article discusses numerous insulin
therapy regimens in children with diabetes in Saudi Arabia, including the
management of acute complications, sick day management and follow-ups.
