Sheela Prasad completed her M.A.(Geography)in 1979 and M.Phil, Ph.D (1984) from JNU, New Delhi. She started her career as a Research Associate in the Centre for Area Studies, Osmania University and joined University of Hyderabad in 1996. Presently she is Professor and Head of Centre for Regional Studies, School of Social Sciences in the University.
A Geographer by training her research interests are inter disciplinary and include Urban and Regional Geography, Environment, Health and Gender issues. She has a number of publications in her research interest areas and has presented papers at several International and National seminars. Some of her significant publications are listed below.
Prof. Prasad has been Visiting Scholar to the Institute of Planning Studies, University of Nottingham, UK and Visiting Faculty to the University of Pittsburgh, USA. She has been invited as a Faculty for the Semester at Sea Program, University of Pittsburgh and University of Virginia.
She is actively involved with various NGOs and Research Institutes in Hyderabad. She is a Executive Member of Anveshi Research Centre for Women Studies, Hyderabad and is on the Board of Trustees of the Centre for Peoples Forestry, Hyderabad besides being involved with other organizations in the City.
